When a UPI QR code will not scan
Start with the object in front of you. A printed square, a link in a chat, and a person telling you to scan so that you can receive money need different checks. A picture problem is not a bank-limit problem.
The printed or on-screen square will not scan
Symptom: the camera cannot lock onto the square, or a reader says there is no code.
Checks:
- Hold the phone flat to the code, not at a sharp angle. Glossy lamination reflects lamps into the camera. A matte surface scans more reliably.
- Print at the size on the file. Fit to page can shrink the code. Leave a blank margin around the square.
- Keep the square itself dark on a light background.
- If it still fails, read the text before anyone pays. A UPI app’s scanner starts a payment. This site’s code reader only shows text and does not ask for a UPI PIN. Look for upi://pay and the pa value. That value is the UPI ID the code requests. If it is not yours, stop using the print.
Someone may have stuck a new code on top
Symptom: the UPI ID you read is not the one you printed.
Run a finger around the square. A second sticker often lifts at a corner. Remove that sheet. Make a new picture from your own UPI ID. Do not keep taking payments on a code you did not read.
Contact your bank when money has already moved and the destination was not yours. This page cannot see that transfer.
The picture reads, but the UPI app does not open a payment
Symptom: a text reader shows upi://pay, and the payment app shows nothing or stops before the PIN screen.
Check that pa looks like name@bank or name@upi, and that cu, if it is present, is INR. This reader does not decide whether that ID exists.
When the text is a normal upi://pay request and your app still will not show a confirm screen, use that app’s own help. This page cannot see the app’s error.
The app shows a bank or network error
Symptom: the app itself names a bank failure, a network failure, or a refused payment.
That is not a glare or margin problem. Retry from the app. This page has no limit figures and does not know whether an account is frozen.
Contact the bank or the app when the message names them, or when money left an account and did not arrive. Keep the reference the app shows.
A payment link will not open
This is not the checklist above. A link is text, often upi:// or an https:// address. Some chat apps show upi:// as plain text and do not turn it into a button. That failure is about the link and the chat app.
Use UPIQRTool’s payment-link generator for a direct upi://pay URI. If the link is shown as plain text or does not open, the issue is with the link handler or chat app. Do not use the printed-code checklist for that problem.
Scanning does not make money arrive
Receiving money does not require you to scan a code or enter a UPI PIN. The Reserve Bank of India said this in its 28 January 2022 press release: transactions that receive money do not need a barcode, a QR code, or an MPIN. Do not share a UPI PIN, OTP, or card number with someone who says they are a bank employee. See the RBI press release.
NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance also says that scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making payments, not receiving money. Read the NPCI guidance.
